Our Staff:

Beth Shammas Beth Shammas, teacher and director of curriculum and instruction for communication. Beth has worked as a teacher, advisor and course developer for fourteen years in the area of adult and high school education. She holds a California multiple subject teaching credential and has completed training in "Effective Communication Skills and Relationship Building Seminars" by Selwa Said as well as "Affective Skills for Adolescents" by Connie Dembrowski.
Dan Malone Dan Malone, teacher, project coordinator and curriculum developer for communication. Dan is an instructor of "Effective Communication Skills" as developed by Selwa Said. He facilitates monthly group meetings on communication skills. Dan participates with the Business and Education Alliance of Monterey (BEAM) which helps to prepare high school students for employment.
Lily Kotler Lily Kotler, occupational therapist and teacher of art and wilderness appreciation. Lily is a Registered Occupational Therapist. She received her training through the University of Illinois in Champaign and the affiliated Medical Center in Chicago. She has worked in the field of Psychiatry at Riveredge Hospital, the University of Chicago Hospital and the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. While serving the local community over the last twenty-five years, she has been employed by the Carmel Adult School and Monterey Peninsula College, offering classes in homemaking, arts and crafts, exercise and personal development. She has been teaching at Rippling River, an independent living center for physically and psychosocially challenged adults, at Hastings Reservation with rural families and at Carmel Valley Manor with convalescent adults. She is currently working with teens at the Silver Star Youth Program at Rancho Cielo sponsored by the Monterey County Probation Department.
Pat Esterline Pat Esterline, educational specialist.
Pat has been an educational specialist/consultant for the past eight years, at elementary and secondary levels,and at Monterey Peninsula College. She has worked primarily in small groups and with individuals to strengthen their abilities in auditory processing, phonemic awareness, and visual memory, as well as, training in concept imagery, comprehension, and written expression. Pat's goal is to help her students develop learning strategies through a multi-sensory approach that is tailored to meet the needs of each individual's learning style. She is currently working at the Monterey county Probation Department Youth Center in collaboration with Monterey County Office of Education.
 
Pippa Arend, Program Director.
Pippa has a B.A. in Art History and Design from Marlboro College in Vermont. She apprenticed with a Portland metal sculptor and attended Pacific Northwest College of Art to study a variety of 2D and 3D art forms. In addition to her extensive artistic background, Pippa is an avid rock climber and enjoys hiking in the Cascades. She has been leading outdoor trips with homeless youth since 2002.
 
 
Joy Cartier, Assistant Director.
Joy has worked with homeless youth for over fifteen years. She had eight years experience with the Greenhouse Alternative Learning Center instructing the GED program and continues to work in an educational capacity as Assistant Director of P;ear. Joy spent several years as a community organizer and volunteer both in Portland and San Francisco. For several years she organized a project to provide a monthly hot meal for 80-100 homeless youth, as well as founded the award-winning “Produce for People”, a community garden system that provided fresh produce for a adult and family shelters.

 
  Justin Oswald, Northwest Program Director.
Justin has a B.A. in Studio Art and Hispanic Studies from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. He came to Portland in 1998 and stayed to pursue his career as an Art Dealer. After successfully running a gallery for four years, he moved on to the design world. Justin now works with P;ear through the Foundation for Honey’s Children to develop new programs in creative mentorship for youth and educational programs focusing on GED and higher level learning.
